High School supports learners and school communities in building local capacity and offering inclusive, culturally grounded programs that connect classroom learning to real-world experiences, such as trades, land-based learning, and work placements.
Graduation Planner
The First Nations Education Commission (FNEC) recognized that there is an urgent need for tools that can help students navigate their way through the school system towards graduation. The Yukon First Nation Education Directorate (YFNED) created two versions of a Graduation Planner booklet — one for students/families and one for school staff and educational support staff. Now, parents/guardians, caregivers, school staff and administration, and First Nations educational support staff can best support the journey of every student, and encourage and guide them to make good decisions and work up to their potential.
All Yukon public high school students can benefit from the information laid out in this booklet. The First Nation School Board high schools will be incorporating this booklet into their counselling resources.

Trades Program
The trades program is a powerful way for learners to apply classroom knowledge through hands-on, real-world experiences. From carpentry and welding to culinary arts and fashion technologies, trades help bring subjects like math and science to life.
These programs not only support different learning styles but also open doors to future employment. Many trades offer earn-while-you-learn models, reducing student debt and building job-ready skills.
The High School team works with the school communities to offer trades opportunities that reflect community strengths, learner interests, and culturally relevant practices.
Work Experience Program
The Work Experience (WEX) program provides learners with the opportunity to earn high school credits while gaining hands-on experience in career paths that inspire them.
Whether shadowing nurses, learning from skilled tradespeople, or protecting the land as Jr. Land Guardians, learners are stepping out of the classroom and into their communities—exploring interests, building confidence, and planning for life after graduation.
Rooted in community and culture, WEX reflects the unique strengths and opportunities of each place. The program supports learners in meeting graduation requirements while developing essential workplace skills and shaping their career goals with purpose and clarity.
Land Experiential Programming
On-the-land learning is a powerful way to connect learners with the natural world and their local environment. We encourage educators to tie these experiences directly to the curriculum, making learning meaningful and relevant.
The High School team is developing localized, intensive land-based courses in English, Science, and Math to support this approach.
